Reach Out…(an editorial view)

Amidst the frantic checking of pages and flurry of activity, I stop to think. Should I address the drug problem that media has exposed, the consequent drug test that BPO employees have to pass to prove that they are sincere, honest and law abiding citizens or the latest and third highly publicized fraud. The BPO industry is kind in a way to me and other media houses. They are like constant news feed. The news channels are all in a buzz about yet another employee committing fraud with a leading bank and international customers.

With yet another incident of dishonesty, it is high time that BPOs realize the dangers of a young mind. Our society is drunk on youth. There is no longer place for the old, old-fashioned or high path in life. Inspiration is money. Respect is money. The 'bling' culture in essence is about not being apologetic about chasing money or having it.

That's where the danger lies. Youngsters watch movies that proclaim that they are the future. Our media, our celluloid have no space for anything motivational, inspirational or teaching. Movies about undetected crime and smart ways to outwit the system have always been around. Who doesn’t love a movie where a smart thief basks in the Bahamas after his very brilliant coup? Even the ads, movies, book deals scream youth and money and glamour. There is no space for failure. Today's youth does not respect, they idolize. They know it all. Coz, even for a moment if they expose that they are not as smart, as go-getting, as witty, as rich, as knowledgeable, as with it… they are doomed.

So, you might think where am I going with all this? Nadeem, I am sure thought of his misdemeanor, how we think of cheating in an examination, as one of those small wrongs in life which will just get you ahead in life, faster and easily. But, is aggressive persecution an example really?

It's apparent that to train about processes and operations anymore is not enough. Where society has stopped listening and even spiritualism fails to connect as an inspiration and the young smart all-knowing over achievers laugh at a motivational, inspirational path showing stories and call it mushy crap. It is this teaching that will most benefit the industry. Teaching, apart from gaining and profit and getting rich and subsequently empowered. Honesty, integrity and hard work still mean something. It is the only way we can protect the future. To make them realize that it takes hard work, humility and perseverance that will get them anywhere in life. Ethics and morals and values should now be a part of the training process. They are young, there is scope for temptation.

And while on the sermonizing mode, and, this is not to push a cause or peddle third rate journalism. This is about using, harnessing and controlling the way this industry is perceived. Shutting the world out on the greatest thing that has happened to our economy is a funny policy. Review those policies. Because a 23-year-old will never understand that saying "No Comments" or "We are not allowed to divulge this" to a reporter could ever escalate into anything. Communicate. It’s the biggest weapon. Media is a power and when ignored will escalate into chaos. They are in effect 'The Last Word'. Like it or not.

So reach out, it's time to give back more than just money.
